CDC identifies 32 cases of Salmonella in 10 states

Outbreak linked to cucumbers from Mexico

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is investigating a multistate outbreak of Salmonella infections linked to cucumbers. The outbreak has sickened 32 people in 10 states, including California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Minnesota, Ohio, Virginia, and Wisconsin.

The CDC is advising consumers to avoid eating cucumbers from Mexico. The cucumbers in the outbreak were distributed to grocery stores and restaurants in the United States and Canada.

Symptoms of Salmonella infection include diarrhea, vomiting, fever, and abdominal cramps. The illness usually lasts for 4 to 7 days, and most people recover without treatment.

The CDC is working with state and local health departments to investigate the outbreak and identify the source of the contamination.

Here are some tips to help you avoid getting sick from Salmonella:

  • Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before and after handling food.
  • Wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly before eating them.
  • Cook meat, poultry, and eggs to a safe internal temperature.
  • Avoid eating raw or undercooked animal products.
  • Do not eat food that has been left out at room temperature for more than two hours.

If you think you may have a Salmonella infection, see your doctor right away.
